The year was 2004 and inspired by watching early MMA events our head instructor, Tom Barlow, was looking for a place to train grappling and Jiu Jitsu. Unfortunately, the closest instructor’s were 100’s of miles away.
Consequently, Tom spent the next few year’s attending seminars, travelling countless hours to attend classes, and doing whatever he could to train Jiu Jitsu.
Finally, after two years of searching, and at the suggestion of MMA super coach Erik Paulson, Tom began training with BJJ world champion, Braulio Estima.
Unfortunately, Braulio was over 200 miles away so Tom could only train with him once or twice per month. To compliment his training and share his passion for Jiu Jitsu, Tom introduced regular grappling classes alongside the Kickboxing and Filipino Martial Arts classes already taught at Masters Academy Plymouth.
The original idea was to create a place where Tom could hone his skills and share his passion for grappling and MMA. Over the last ten years, Tom and Master’s Academies aspirations and goals have evolved. However, they always remain dedicated to creating a best possible environment for their students.
Their current is vision:
We believe the atmosphere of the academy and its classes play a vital role in the success of the people training there. That atmosphere should be enjoyably challenging.
If the classes are enjoyable students will want to keep training, consequently they’ll get the greatest benefit from martial arts. However, they must also be a challenge as this offers the greatest opportunity for growth and encourages students outside of their comfort zones.
We achieve this by using a simple formula in all our classes. Every classes we teach uses the Smiling, Sweating, Learning principle. You should come out of every class smiling, covered in sweat, and having learned something about Jiu Jitsu and yourself.
In June 2016, we announced that we’re opening Plymouth’s first full-time Jiu Jitsu Academy. This school is dedicated to sharing our passion for Jiu Jitsu in enjoyably challenging classes.
Regardless of our structure or location, our goal is to position Masters Academy as the leader professional martial arts academies and to have our members to associate Masters Academy with the absolute best atmosphere, training, and service.
