Over Coming The Fear Of Starting Jiu Jitsu.

Many people know the benefits they’ll get from starting martial arts classes. However, they lack the confidence to take their first class.

And that’s completely understandable.

Starting any new activity can be intimidating and when you couple that with the thought of getting squashed by a sweaty, hairy giant, taking your first class becomes downright scary.

However, the techniques and strategies taught in Jiu Jitsu can be life saving.

You see Brazilian Jiu Jitsu allows a weaker, smaller person to control and subdue a much larger opponent. This is accomplished through leverage and applied pressure as opposed to strength and power, which makes it perfect for women as a form of self-defence.

Competition and Jiu Jitsu

Plus, unlike many martial arts, you will do a lot of live practice against a fully resisting opponent. Live training is the ONLY way you really learn a technique and if you’ll know use it, it’ll work.

Live training (or rolling as it’s known in the sport) is also one of the most enjoyable aspects of BJJ training and AMAZING for your fitness.

But first, you have to get started.

And apart from getting over the intimidation factor (which we’ll talk about in a moment), there are two important things you should do before you start classes.

First, you have to FIND THE RIGH PLACE to train.

Look for an academy that promotes the same VALUES as you but also has your SAFETY at heart.

Then go and TRY A CLASS. Most academies will offer you a free trial class and you should ALWAYS try a class before you decided to join. This is the only real way to know I an academy is right for you.

However, even if you follow these two steps, many women still worry about training with guys.

This is why ladies only classes can be great place to start. You know, when you attend a ladies only class you will only be training with well…ladies. There will be no meatheads trying to crush you.
