The half guard is one of the most common guard positions in Jiu Jitsu. And whether you’re attacking or passing the half guard one of the keys to success is the under hook position.
Whoever controls the under hook in half guard has the advantage.
If the Jiu Jitsu player on the bottom has the under hook, they’ll be able to get underneath their opponent and sweep or submit. If the player on top has the under hook, then they can flatten out their opponent and pass.
So what can you do when you’re trying to pass, and your opponent gets the under hook or gets deep underneath you?
Well, there are a couple of things you can do to neutralise the under hook such as re-pummeling and switching sides.
However, I want to share with you a technique that has been working very well for me to pass the half guard and stop the dreaded under hook.
It’s a variation of the back step, but unlike the regular back step, it doesn’t require you drag your opponent with you, PLUS it leave’s you in a really strong Knee Slide position.
